KARING FOR KAITLYN & DANIELLE
The Glodowski Family
At just two months old, Kaitlyn was diagnosed with a condition called metopic craniosynostosis with trigonocephaly, which means that the plates in her forehead had fused together to early and her forehead had a peaked appearance instead of being flat. Without surgery, her brain would not be able to grow properly and leave her with developmental delays. On May 3, Kaitlyn underwent a lengthy operation where doctors made a zigzag incision from ear to ear to remove the forehead and brow bone. They then reconstructed the pieces and reattached them with plates and screws. Fortunately, she has not experienced any developmental delays and is recovering well. But the costs for the surgery and subsequent hospital stay began to mount.
As if dealing with Kaitlyn’s surgery weren’t hard enough, in August of this year, Danielle was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. On September 15, Danielle underwent surgery to have her thyroid removed. Doctors found cancer in the thyroid and surrounding lymph nodes. In December, she will start radiation treatment and will need to be quarantined in the hospital for at least five days.
Although they both work full time, only Danielle’s employer provides health insurance. With the triplet’s birth and subsequent NICU stay, Kaitlyn’s surgery and Danielle’s operation all occurring in less than a year, they have completely exhausted all of their family medical leave and vacation time. Any additional time taken off for treatment of Danielle’s cancer or follow up visits for Kaitlyn will have to be taken as unpaid leave. In addition, the family’s portion of the health insurance will need to be prepaid. The mounting medical bills have become overwhelming and the family is struggling just to afford the basic necessities.
Between the unpaid leave for doctor’s appointments and radiation treatments and the increasing medical bills, the family is desperate for financial assistance.
